Press release from the City of Wilmington: April 21, 2022 Earth Day/Open Streets celebration takes place Downtown on Saturday afternoon and the Delaware Running Festival returns to the City on Sunday Earth Day/Open Streets celebration takes place Downtown on Saturday Mayor Mike Purzycki is pleased to welcome two popular annual events to Wilmington this weekend. An Open Streets party to celebrate Earth Day 2022 will take place on Saturday, April 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. along six traffic-free blocks of Downtown Market Street. On Sunday, April 24 beginning at 7 a.m., the Delaware Marathon Running Festival will kick off from Tubman Garrett Park and proceed along the Riverfront as well portions of Downtown and Brandywine Park. Both events will take place rain or shine. The Earth Day/Open Streets Wilmington event will be open only to pedestrians from 4th through 10th streets so children of all ages and their families can stop by and visit eco-friendly vendors and exhibitors. Motorists are advised that all cross streets – 4th, 5th 6th 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Streets – will be closed between North King Street and North Shipley Street starting at 1 p.m. and continuing until about 5 p.m. More information about the Earth Day/Open Streets celebration can be found at: delawareestuary.org/news-and-events/earthday A number of traffic restrictions will be in place on Sunday, April 24 as the 19th Annual Delaware Marathon Running Festival is held in Wilmington. The event includes a full- and half-marathon as well as a 10K and 5K race. Participants will gather at the Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park along the Christina Riverfront where all races will begin and end. The full marathon, half marathon, and 10K race all kick off at 7 a.m. The 5K begins at 7:20 a.m. The 26.2-mile marathon course will again incorporate the Jack A. Markell Trail between Wilmington and New Castle. On Sunday morning starting at 6:30 a.m., motorists will experience traffic detours, road closures and/or runners on the roadway throughout the City. Impacted roadways include roads in the neighborhoods of the Riverfront, Compton Village, Midtown Brandywine, Brandywine Park, the Highlands, and the Delaware Art Museum areas. The following traffic restrictions will be in effect: Rosa Parks Drive will be closed to traffic for event activities South Market Street will be closed at MLK Jr. Boulevard King Street southbound traffic reduced to one lane from North Market Street North Park Drive will be closed between North Market Street and North Van Buren Street South Park Drive will be closed between North King Street and North Union Street Lovering Avenue will be closed between North Rodney Street and North Dupont Street Kentmere Parkway will be closed between North Union Street and Bancroft Parkway Bancroft Parkway will be closed between Kentmere Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue Woodlawn Avenue will be closed between Delaware Avenue and Red Oak Road Tower Drive around Rockford Park will be closed West 19th Street will be closed between Brinkle Avenue and Tower Road Brinkle Avenue will be closed between West 19th Street and West 16th Street Tower Road will be closed between Pennsylvania Ave and West 19th Street All other impacted roadways will be open to vehicular traffic, but motorists should use caution due to the presence of race participants Impacted DART Bus routes will be noted on DART's website.
