9th Annual Restorative Justice Symposium

Description
Join us as we explore how restorative justice practices can help communities transform historical harms and build more just communities. "When the wounding is not addressed, victims, witnesses and perpetrators remain in cycles of victimhood and violence/aggression/domination. Those who are aggressors often see the only other option to dominating others as being dominated, so they work hard to maintain their positions. Those who are victims of harm struggle to find a sense of agency that allows them to break out of the cycle of victimhood." - Transforming Historical Harms (Hooker & Czajkowski). Michigan State University is thrilled to welcome Jasmyn Elise Story. Jasmyn is an international Restorative Justice Facilitator, Doula, and the founder of Honeycomb Justice and Freedom Farm Azul. Named one of Vice’s 31 People Making History by Creating a Better Future, they are a dedicated human rights activist with a decade of experience working in the voluntary sector. As the former Deputy Director of Social Justice & Racial Equity for the Office of the Mayor of Birmingham, Jasmyn co-led the launch of the State of Alabama’s first government sustained Women’s Initiative. This decentralized movement aims to interrupt the cycles of harm plaguing Birmingham’s women, children, trans, and non-binary folk. After completion of their M.A. in Human Rights at the University College London, they are currently completing their Ph.D. as a third-generation Tuskegee University student. Please join us as we gather in a common hope and desire to build stronger, healthier individuals and communities. Registered participants will leave this session with a general understanding of how Restorative Justic (RJ) and Restorative Practices (RP) can meet the needs of those who are most affected by historical harms. NOTE: Following the symposium, on June 16 & 17, we are offering a 2-day Advance Restorative Justice Training which will REQUIRE registrants to have had some introduction to RJ. Attending the June 15th symposium will help to satisfy that requirement. PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION FOR THE 2-DAY TRAINING IS SEPARATE from this symposium registration. *The 2022 RJ@Symposium is brought to you with generous support from The Office of the Ombudsperson and The Division of Student Life and Engagement.
