Description
HERNDON, VA — Herndon Elementary School is celebrating its 60th anniversary from 1-3 p.m., on Sunday, with a big party, featuring music, dancing, two bouncy slides and a bunch of family-friendly activities.
"The whole party is happening on the playground," PTA President Sara Murphy said. "There's going to be pizza for sale, a photo booth, and the Hershey's Ice Cream truck is coming."
At 2 p.m., the school will dedicate its new outdoor learning space designed by Mark Mosley, a Herndon Elementary resource teacher. The PTA will also present a $25,000 check to the school for an enclosed play space for students in the Headstart and Special Education programs. The money comes from the proceeds of the PTA's spring fundraiser and a grant from the Town of Herndon.
Local officials will also be on hand to take part in the dedication ceremony, including FCPS Superintendent Scott Brabrand, Dranesville District School Board Member Elaine Tholen, Regional Superintendent Douglas Tyson, and members of the Herndon Town Council.
"After everybody gets a chance to talk, we have free cupcakes for everyone, because it's not a birthday party without a cupcake," Murphy said, with a laugh.
Herndon Elementary's bee mascot welcomes visitors to the school at 630 Dranesville Road.
