Description

Students at Botello Elementary School participated in a special 'SEEDS + SOIL = ROOTS' educational initiative today in which they learned how to grow healthy and sustainable food in celebration of Earth Day. In a school assembly students from the 4th and 5th grade classes received and planted portable gardens to cultivate in their classrooms, and participated in an interactive gardening activity which they took home. This experience was designed to introduce them to the physical, emotional, and mental health benefits gained from gardening, while developing a deeper understanding about making healthier food choices. Many children from Title One schools reside in food deserts and it's often difficult for these communities to secure fresh fruits and vegetables. The Roots Food Foundation and Hunger Busters joined forces to help educate students how to make healthy, earth-made food more accessible through gardening. The SEEDS + SOIL = ROOTS initiative is gifting gardens to designated schools throughout the country as an interactive way to encourage students nationwide to "Grow Their Way to Health and Wellness." Roots Food Group, in conjunction with its private nonprofit Roots Food Foundation, launched SEEDS + SOIL = ROOTS in partnership with The Chris Paul Family Foundation, The DeAndre Jordan Treehouse Giving Foundation, and The Kevin Love Fund last year. The gardens are powered by Dallas-based Gardenuity. Presentations to students were given by executives from Roots Food Group, the Roots Food Foundation, Gardenuity and Hunger Busters at the event.
