As COVID Surges In Melrose, Mayor Asks People Skip Holiday Travel

MELROSE, MA — As Massachusetts continues to see record coronavirus numbers, Melrose is likewise struggling to contain the spread of the virus. The Department of Public Health reported more than 646 coronavirus cases in Thursday's report, 72 more than last week's report. Melrose's positive test rate has increased to a new high of 3.55 percent. It remains low enough to keep the city designated yellow — not red — in the COVID-19 map. The city's average daily incidence per 100,000 residents is 33.9. The school district has seen seven cases this month, with two in-person students — one at the Roosevelt and another at the middle school — and one in-person employee at the Roosevelt among them. Mayor Paul Brodeur is asking residents to refrain from holiday travel in an effort to limit further spread of the virus. "The virus continues to spread, and traveling can make things worse," he said in a video posted Thursday night.
