COMMACK, NY — Suffolk County police have released additional details about Tuesday morning's five-vehicle crash that closed one side of the Long Island Expressway for several hours. Police said Lonnie Garrett, 63, of Coram, was driving a 2012 Toyota Highlander west near Exit 53 for the Sagtikos State Parkway at about 7 a.m. when he rear-ended a 2004 Honda CR-V driven by Eduardo Turcios, 67. The impact caused a chain-reaction crash involving a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica, a 2016 Mercedes 350 and a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. Turcios, of Westbury, was seriously injured and airlifted via Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. Garrett and the three other drivers were taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. The vehicles were impounded for safety checks and an investigation was ongoing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
