TOWN OF SMITHTOWN, NY — A Commack man attacked two New York State Police troopers during a traffic stop early Sunday in the Town of Smithtown, police said. Troopers stopped a white 2020 Mercedes Benz G30 for traffic violations on the northbound side of Sunken Meadow Parkway in the Town of Smithtown at 12:50 a.m., police said. The driver, Francis D. Garofalo, 55, became combative while performing standard field sobriety tests and resisted arrest, police said. Garofalo assaulted both troopers; striking one in the eye and spraining the other's wrist before they could place him in custody, police said. The troopers were treated for their injuries and released from Southside Hospital, police said. Garofalo was charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and second-degree assault (a felony). He is scheduled to be arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court, though police did not give a date.
