Tour with Friends of the Harborwalk: Boston: A History Written in Stone

Join Scot Krueger for a combination presentation and walking tour to examine the role that geology has played in the history of Boston! The presentation will begin in the Leventhal Center Room at the Boston Harbor Hotel - located at 70 Rowes Wharf. The Leventhal Center Room is accessible by walking through the hotel's large exterior arch and turning left. (The room is not accessible from the lobby or the interior of the Boston Harbor Hotel.) A 30-minute presentation will describe the geologic history of the greater Boston area and some of the most common local building stones. After the presentation, we will walk north along the Harborwalk, examining building stones used along the waterfront. Along the way, we will discuss the history and settlement of Boston, with an emphasis on the role played by local geology. We will also discuss the timely issues of the Harbor cleanup in recent decades and the potential danger that sea level rise poses to the man-made land along the waterfront. The walking tour will proceed along the Harborwalk, around the New England Aquarium, to Long Wharf – a stone jetty which helped establish Boston as a maritime commercial hub in the New World and played a key role in the run-up to the Revolutionary War. From Long Wharf, we will walk up State Street to the Custom House Tower to examine its majestic columns of Quincy granite. The entire tour weaves its way around the Aquarium MBTA stop and is never more than a 10-minute walk from the subway. Due to seating/space constraints, only ticket holders will have access to this event. All are welcome, but please only RSVP if you plan to come, as seating space is limited and we want to be able to contact you in case of inclement weather. The Friends of the Boston Harborwalk is a volunteer group affiliated with Boston Harbor Now. The group meets monthly to create awareness, promote public enjoyment, and foster local stewardship of Boston’s 43-mile Harborwalk.
