Description

YWCA Greater Baton Rouge's Stand Against Racism Symposium: featuring the Daughter of Malcolm X Ilyasah Shabazz, John Gray, & Refreshments. 2022 Campaign "Stand Against Racism" This year, our Stand Against Racism Campaign centers around a new theme, We Can't Wait: Equity and Justice Now! Our country was founded on building a government of the people, by the people, for the people. More than two hundred years later, this vision still presents shortcomings. Though generations of civil rights activism have led to significant gains in legal, political, social, educational, and other spheres, the forced displacement of indigenous peoples and the institution of slavery marked the beginnings of a system of racial injustice from which our country has yet to break free. We say enough is enough! The deep-seated systemic racism and inequities that disadvantage communities of color can still be woven into our institutions' fabric today—from civic engagement to economic development, from education to health care, and even the often poor portrayal of people of color in the media. We must work collectively to root out inequity in our communities and the institutions that compose our society and demand justice and equity. Led by the Stand Against Racism Challenge, which provides folks the opportunity to dedicate 21 days to pursuing racial justice, this year's theme merges five focus areas that will guide and inform our racial equity work. These focus areas include civic engagement, economic opportunity and security, education, health care, and media representation. Join us as we close this year's Stand Against Racism Campaign out with a VERY SPECIAL PROGRAM. Our Program will feature a keynote by the Daughter of Malcolm X Ilyasah Shabazz, a musical performance by John Gray, and refreshments on April 29, 2022, at 6:30 PM, located at the BREC Ballroom (Address: 6201 Florida Blvd, BR, LA 70806).
