Description

For those of you who have been wondering about what it’s like to have an unconventional pet such as a hedgehog or are simply curious about hedgehogs, you are in luck! Who Has A Pet Hedgehog?, written by local Medford author Jan Heng who has a pet hedgehog herself, is essentially the Hedgehog Care 101 for readers of all ages. This picture book is packed with witty language and vivid details that introduce readers to the basics of hedgehog behavior, diet, living environment, sleeping habits, and more. Included also are details that first-time or interested owners might not think of, such as finding a breeder, purchasing and cleaning a closure for the hedgehog, watching out for shedded quills, hibernation habits (not all types of hedgehogs hibernate), and acquiring various types of live worms for feeding hedgehogs. Jan Heng is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. She has always wanted a hedgehog as a pet, but it is illegal in Singapore, Jan’s native country, and in Australia, where she completed her undergraduate and PhD studies. Jan’s interest in having a pet hedgehog revived, however, when she moved to the U.S. where it is legal to own hedgehogs in Massachusetts. Jan adopted Odin, the picture book’s star, from Cape Cod Hedgehogs. Jan’s desire to capture the unique connection between her daughter, Victoria, and Odin inspired her to write this picture book. Sadly Odin passed away recently, but his memory will live for many more years to come in the hearts of those who loved him and of many more through this picture book. Who Has A Pet Hedgehog? is illustrated by freelance illustrator The Milky Way a.k.a Tan Su En, who is based in Malaysia. The muli font used in the book was specifically selected to make reading easier for readers with dyslexia or low vision. Bonus photos of little Odin and its habitat are included at the end! Who Has A Pet Hedgehog? is available for purchase starting on October 1st, 2020, in multiple formats including hardcover, paperback, and ebook. You can learn more on Jan’s website (www.whohasapetbooks.wordpress.com), or on her social media pages (@whohasapetbooks).
