Description

Monday Evening Concerts presents the West Coast premiere of Tyshawn Sorey's 'For George Lewis.' Join us in the open-air courtyard at Hauser & Wirth as Monday Evening Concerts presents the West Coast premiere of Tyshawn Sorey's exquisitely glacial and gently monumental work 'For George Lewis' on Gary Simmons’ sculptural installation ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ (2014 – ongoing). ‘There was always a saying in my family: you can never forget the bridge that carried you through. And so George Lewis was one of the key people who basically carried me over this body of water that I was drowning in, someone who helped me to learn to embrace myself and where I come from as a composer and as an improviser.’ - Tyshawn Sorey A staggeringly multifaceted musical mind, Sorey has spent his career as a drummer, conductor, pianist, teacher and composer, collaborating with artists such as John Zorn, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams and Wadada Leo Smith, as well groups like the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, International Contemporary Ensemble and Alarm Will Sound. In this fifty-minute work, Sorey pays homage to George Lewis, a legendary mentor who himself has made an indelible mark on the musical world as a trombonist, improviser, teacher, writer and composer. The work will be performed by ECHOI, the resident ensemble of Monday Evening Concerts, conducted by Jonathan Hepfer. ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ (2014 – ongoing) will be on view in the gallery’s outdoor courtyard through 22 May. Both a literal and metaphorical platform for conversations, music, and performance, this work is inspired by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s studio and is comprised of amalgamated materials sourced from the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Originally shown as part of the 2014 Prospect.3 biennial in New Orleans, ‘Black Ark’ has been presented at Art Basel Unlimited, Miami, art space Southern Exposure in San Francisco, and Desert X in Coachella Valley, California. Reservations and proof of vaccination upon arrival are required. After the performance, dine at Manuela, the gallery's onsite restaurant. Reservations are highly encouraged.
