Description

Curator Conversations! Sunday, April 24 Curator Conversations 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Check in at 1:45 p.m. Free First Floor of Corinthian Hall Space is limited. Curator of Collections Lisa Shockley highlights the A.G. Spalding Company and the history of a baseball catcher’s mitt. The mitt was made between 1900-1920 and was originally owned by Kansas City resident Carl Byers. The company was founded by Albert Goodwill Spalding, Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher and co-founder of the National League, as a company to manufacture high-quality, “official” baseball gear. Over the years, the company branched out to make official professional footballs, tennis equipment, basketballs and other sporting goods. Now known as Spalding Sports Worldwide, the company is still in business and still manufactures the official balls for both the NFL and the NBA. Led by Curator of Collections Lisa Shockley, Curator Conversations is a series of programs that explores the objects currently on display and delves into themes, topics, and conservation practices. These programs are intended to enhance the museum visit. Please check in at the admissions desk in the R.A. Long Foundation Grand Hall at 1:45 p.m.
