What's Up Prince William April 20, 2022 Dog training classes are underway in Dumfries. The Humane Society of Northern Virginia (HSNV) has begun offering them for the season. "I adore training, and we feel that training is the best community project we can have in our community," said Phillis Peppard, who has been a trainer since the early 2000s. "Dogs, sadly, end up in a shelter everyday through no fault of their own." Dog owners may sign up for a puppy class, beginner Canine Good Citizen (CGC) class, and a CGC class through which a dog can earn their American Kennel Club (AKC) title. Having an CGC title comes with some benefits, like possible discounts through the homeowners insurance. It also makes it easier to bring a dog to places and travel. Dog training classes take place in a play yard that the Humane Society plans to upgrade using part of an open arms challenge grant it received from Maddie's Fund. Those interested in learning more information or signing up for training classes may email Peppard at [email protected]. They will receive an application and more information about the class they are interested in. "We do like to do an interview with our … prospective dogs, so that we can get a feeling of where they'll fit in and who would be the best dogs to put in a class with them," Peppard explained. To make a donation, visit the Humane Society's website. Powered by Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P), the HSNV is located at 17983 Dumfries Shopping Plaza. It began operating last year. What's Up Prince William (WUPW.news) provides free coverage and event promotion for non-profits, and highlights businesses and individuals who are doing good things. Steve's Auto Repair & Tire in Woodbridge funds WUPW.news, as part of its commitment to supporting the community.
