HERNDON, VA — All 30 tickets Benjamin Shuler of Herndon had bought in the Virginia Lottery's Pick 4 drawing on March 28 were all winners, according to a lottery release.
Shuler's cousin called him shortly after midnight to tell him they'd both won in that night's drawing, because they'd each used the same four-digital combination: 0-8-1-6.
While his cousin had purchased just one ticket, Shuler had used the numbers on all 30 tickets he'd purchased for the March 28 drawing. Twenty-nine tickets won the game's top prize of $5,000. With the remaining ticket, Shuler wagered only 50 cents instead of $1, so that ticket earned him $2,500. In total, he won $147,000.
Shuler purchased all of his winning tickets in Sterling, 29 at the High Up Food Mart located at 46970 Community Plaza Drive and three at the 7-Eleven at 21800 Towncenter Plaza.
Authorized by a 1987 referendum, the Virginia Lottery generates more than $2 million daily for the state's K-12 public schools. The lottery generated more than $765 million for public education in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021.
