Description

PISCATAWAY, NJ — Cricket fields in Piscataway were vandalized sometime in the past week, in an incident Township officials say may be part of a disturbing and biased trend where cricket courts were vandalized three times in the past year. Most recently someone intentionally smeared tar on one of the cricket pitches at the Normandy Drive cricket fields, according to the Piscataway Police Department. Police said they don't know the exact date this happened, but the cricket pitch was used on April 10 and had no tar on it. The tar was discovered April 19. The tar was poured sometime between Thursday, April 14 and April 15, police said in a new addition to this report. Crews will attempt to remove the tar Friday, April 22. According to police, this is similar to a previous vandalizing of an adjacent cricket pitch — again at the Normandy Drive cricket fields — where cement was intentionally placed on the pitch. The cement incident occurred in September 2021. It was cleaned up, but then another incident occurred where more cement was poured. "These acts of vandalism are not the mere destruction of Township property, but an ugly expression of defiance and intolerance against the many Piscataway residents who enjoy the sport of cricket and have been looking forward to warm weather to begin playing again," said Piscataway Police Chief Thomas Mosier.
