CRANSTON, RI — Police arrested two people in connection to a shooting at a Cranston apartment complex Tuesday.
Jacob Cruz, 19, of Cranston, was arraigned Wednesday and charged with four counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon, license permitted or required for carrying a pistol, drive-by shootings and firing in a compact area. The other person arrested was a juvenile, so their identity will not be released.
Around 7:15 p.m., Tuesday, police were called to the Riverbend Apartments on Dyer Avenue for a report of a fight inside one of the apartment units. The altercation involved male and female teens between the ages of 16 and 19, police said.
The fight had moved to outside the apartment building by the time officers arrived.
Police said Cruz and a juvenile then got into Cruz's car and tried to strike people while driving in reverse. No one was injured, and the suspects left the area temporarily, police said.
When Cruz and the juvenile returned, Cruz fired a gun from his car, almost hitting the group from the party, police said. The round struck an apartment building, but failed to penetrate the exterior, police said.
Witnesses gave police Cruz's license plate number, and with that, officers learned he was on Route 10 southbound, driving towards Providence. Providence police found Cruz and the juvenile just before 10 p.m., on Manton Avenue.
Police said they found a bullet underneath one of the car seats, but the gun was not found.
Cruz's bail was set at $50,000 with surety. He is scheduled to return to court on July 13.
The juvenile was released to a parent, and they will be referred to the Rhode Island Family Court.
