Portland City Council Approves More Expensive Lloyd District Parking

PORTLAND, OR — Drivers attending events in the Lloyd District and Rose Quarter will pay more for parking about 90 days a year thanks to the Portland City Council. The council approved the creation of an event parking district at its meeting Wednesday. The district covers the 1,250 street parking spaces in those two neighborhoods and will go into effect in September. The new prices will go into effect only when events draw 10,000 people or more to the area, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, which pushed for the change. During such events, parking prices will rise to $3 per hour from $1 per hour. The goal of the plan is to persuade eventgoers to use mass transit or to carpool to reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions and improve air quality, the bureau said. It would also make it easier for people to find parking, the bureau added. The higher price will go into effect all day if an event starts before 5 p.m. If it starts at 5 p.m. or later, the higher parking rate will go into effect from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
