EDINA, MN — Edina officials are coordinating a community clothing swap this weekend to celebrate Earth Day. The event is meant to help reduce waste and promote reuse in honor of the environmental holiday. "Let's get our fashion on and keep our clothes out of the landfills!" officials said in an advertisement for the event, which is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Braemar Arena Backyard Rink. CenterPoint Energy Project To Close Edina Road For Several Weeks Organizers said the average American throws away up to 80 pounds of clothing per year. The event will be accepting clothing donations from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Residents can donate one large bag or tote bag full of clothing, which can include any item of "human clothes," organizers said. Any clothing that is not exchanged during the event will be donated through the Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota. Clothing donations and registration are not required to participate in Edina's Earth Day Weekend Community Clothing Exchange. The city is also hosting a sneaker drive in partnership with Warrior Dog Rescue and GotSneakers. Organizers are asking residents to donate sneakers, which will be given to people in need overseas. Sneakers can take up to 30 years to decompose in a landfill, organizers said.
