MARLBOROUGH, MA — Coronavirus is on the rise in Marlborough, according to state health officials. Between Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, Marlborough's average daily number of new cases rose from 4.3 to 5.6, according to Department of Public Health data released Wednesday. The city's positive test rate also rose from 1.49 percent to 2.11 percent over that period — more than double the statewide positive test average of .90 percent. Marlborough has been under the state's watch since early July, when it was one of eight communities across the state chosen to host a free Stop the Spread testing site due to a high-than-average rate of coronavirus infections. The number of active cases in Marlborough stood at 34 on Wednesday, according to Board of Health data. That's the highest dating back to Aug. 12. The city has also reported three new deaths since the beginning of September for a pandemic total of 69. Even with rising infections, Marlborough has begun to reopen. City Hall opened to the public for the first time since the spring the week of Sept. 7. Marlborough Public Schools are set to begin classes on Monday following a hybrid model.
