City Council To Review Name For New Marlborough Elementary School

MARLBOROUGH, MA — A Marlborough City Council committee will meet Thursday to discuss proposed names for the new city elementary school, plus several other local sports fields. Last month, Mayor Arthur Vigeant proposed naming the new school after the Goodnow brothers. Theodore, Andrew and Charles Goodnow were only in their early 20s when they died in the Civil War, and are now buried at Rocklawn Cemetery. The new $56.4 million school along Poirier Road is set to open this fall, and will have a capacity of about 610 students. Vigeant has also proposed names for the softball field at 441 Bolton St., and the baseball field at 25 Union St. The softball field would be named after Richard Demers, a Marine from Marlborough who died while fighting in the Vietnam War. The baseball field would be named after Harold Cole, a World War II-era Navy reservist who died in a plane crash in 1951. "In Marlborough, we take the naming of our public facilities very seriously and take the time to seriously consider all options before deciding to honor a specific veteran," Vigeant wrote in a June 18 letter to City Council. "All the veterans I have proposed have served their country and their city honorably and are deserving of the honor to be bestowed upon them." The City Council Veterans Affairs Committee will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. to discuss the names. If the committee approves, the recommendation will be passed to the full City Council for final approval.
