Description
Ryan Lerman and Hiram Bullock’s Love Guitar Child Wanted for Funk/Soul Mashups/Interpretations That would be our bands ideal mad scientist/Frankenstein guitarist. WHUMP is a north bay mash-up style cover band seeking a guitarist. We need guitar that is slanky in groove, stanky in tone, and funky at all times. Less is definitely more in our quest. Minimal complexity and maximum taste with virtuosic restraint is our god level in a guitarist. Rifftastic shredders and jam band noodlers would be frustrating and frustrated. We seek soul, not solos. And if you are a soul mate, (see what we did there?) you’d probably be a fan of nu-funk/soul: Scary Pockets and Vulfpeck, Silk Sonic, Cory Wong, etc. or maybe old school funk/soul: James Brown, Kool and the Gang, P-Funk, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Isleys, EWF, TOP, War, Sly, Rufus, Ohio Players, Meters, etc. or maybe rebirth and sub genre 80s Funk artists : Prince, Cameo, Gap Band, Shalamar, Pleasure, New Jack Swing and/or The DC GoGo scene groups. Or most likely, a fan of ALL the Funk and Soul. While the basic bones remain a cover band (because that helps give the audience a North Star/anchor to relate to the song) the sound and rhythm will usually generate from a pretty different place than where the original tune it’s deconstructing did. We won’t be doing any “originals”, but we will surely do our covers in a pretty unique way. We are seeking to find the just-right guitarist that helps us generate them (in the most organic way) for our personal, wacky sonic mission. At the same time, big ears are important as we have been known to mine MUCH musical ore from varying genres. (We are rabid musivores) Grooves, lyrics, hooks, motifs and passages are lifted and subversively dropped in quite often—early new wave and Brit punk, 50s west coast jazz, 60s psychedelia, 70s arena rock, 80s east coast hip hop, 90s trip hop, pre-commercial country, post-commercial early goth, industrial, house, grunge, techno, synth pop/trance… Fishbone…name your teenage/middle age life-crisis guilty pleasure. (If you have a giant pedal board, and a warped sense of humor, we are more excited than afraid, is what we’re kinda’ sayin’…) The vocals steer the bus, stylistically it is an ensemble groove trio/quartet that is working to support the singer and is the engine of said bus. Team play is paramount and if your joy is to play/ride so deep in the pocket it’s below da’ lint, please give us a try! Age, gender, style, orientation and even previous band experience is not important-love of the groove is the thing- please come as you are. If you haven’t sensed it yet in this ad, we can tell you bluntly we tend towards reveling in subversive open-mindedness, and guileless sincerity will take you a surprisingly long way in this musical endeavor. We are all triple vaxxed at this time and have no problem masking during rehearsal should you wish. (We built an iso booth for our vocalist so she can un mask during rehearsals). We all trend towards small pods and minimal exposure to outside contact, for our immuno compromised and small children family members as much as anything. (Well that and we’re rather introverted music nerds who don’t need much social time to be happy, and it cuts into our time geeking out about music). Our bass, keys and drummer have DNA from the golden age of 70’s funk and soul. Our singer has the spirit of a teen of the 80s, the soul of a teen of the 60s, and the pipes of a chanteuse of the 50s. We can send Spotify song lists of cuts of bands we adore to help you navigate towards what we seek, and DolbyOn practice roughs of songs we are working on so you can actually hear us live and unvarnished in our north bay (Novato) rehearsal space. We typically get together weekly on either Thursday or Friday and have a fair amount of flexibility as to which day at this time. We are working towards getting solid core members, recording and playing out locally sooner than later, but the main goal for now is savoring our time together, growing as a group and individual musicians. And paying tribute to funk and soul and the beauty it brings. Thanks for taking the time to check our long-a** ad out! Appreciate it.
