VENICE, FL — A "massive" gator was spotted in a Venice neighborhood Tuesday evening by officers with the Venice Police Department. The agency shared a video of the reptile crossing the road at Bird Bay Circle and Bird Bay West to Facebook, warning walkers in the area. (Watch the video below.) "He's currently in the drainage ditch nearby, so please use caution when around this area," VPD wrote. On Sunday, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office saw a gator about 10-feet-long making its way to Harrington Lake. Alligator courtship starts in early April, and mating takes place in May or June, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The females then build a nest and lay their eggs in late June or early July. People with concerns about an alligator should call FWC's toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-392-4286, and the agency will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation.
