Volunteers Help Prepare For Nesting Birds In West Haven

WEST HAVEN, CT — (Contributed): Volunteers from the Sandy Point Neighborhood Association recently helped prepare for rare birds that will soon nest at Sandy Point Beach and Bird Sanctuary. About 15 members and friends of the association picked up plastic bottles and other trash that had blown up on the beautiful beaches here, just before the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection fences off sections of the beach to allow shore birds to nest throughout the summer. The beach supports rare nesting birds such as piping plovers and least terns. "The Sandy Point beaches and marshes are a true gem in West Haven… we hope our efforts this weekend helped make it sparkle a bit more," Association President Michelle Coletti said. She thanked the Association's Beautification Committee for organizing the cleanup initiative, one of 11 planned for the year. This was the Association's first Beach Cleanup for the year. Volunteers came from different sections of the Sandy Point neighborhood to help with the effort. The association provides gloves and trash bags as well as trash grabbers/pickers to assist those who volunteer. Bottled water and snacks are also provided for all participants. The complete schedule of remaining cleanups for the year can be viewed on the association's website, www.SandyPointNeighbors.Org The association was initially formed in 2021 with the purpose of helping to build networks of volunteers to improve communications and the quality of life in this neighborhood, located in the southeastern corner of this city. The association's boundaries are: Washington Avenue on the west; First Avenue on the east; Beach Street on the south; and Brown Street on the north.
