BALTIMORE, MD — A Baltimore Police Department official has been terminated and also is considered a "person of interest" in an ongoing homicide investigation, the Baltimore Sun reported, citing Commissioner Michael Harrison. The terminated official was the department's chief of fiscal services, according to Baltimore Sun reporter Emily Opilo. He was identified as Dana Lamar Antonio Hayes Jr. Harrison did not identify which homicide investigation, the Sun reported. The fired official has been on Baltimore's gun offender registry since 2019, according to FOX 5. "There was a background investigation, and it was missed," Harrison told the Sun. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott released a statement Wednesday afternoon addressing what he called "a systems failure in the civilian hiring process." Scott also said he has directed the city's chief human capital officer to perform "a comprehensive review of BPD's civilian hiring practices and submit recommendations to improve their policies and procedures."
