Description
Press release from Shreve Memorial Library: April 19, 2022 When you think of bacteria, the first thing you want to know is how to get rid of it, but bacteria is everywhere, and in many cases more beneficial than harmful. Shreve Memorial Library, in partnership with the American Society for Microbiology, encourages children to come and learn about ubiquitous bacteria as they present "Bacteria Grub at the Library" on Thursday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m., at the Shreve Memorial Library Hamilton/South Caddo Branch. The program is free and takes place in the meeting room at the branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. "Bacteria Grub at the Library" is designed to engage students and inspire them to pursue careers in science. Adronisha Frazier, assistant professor at Northshore Technical Community College, serving as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Young Ambassador to Louisiana, will share information about the nature of bacteria and its benefits. Attendees will participate in hands-on activities, such as taking environmental samples of bacteria, swabbing agar plates and observing bacteria growth after incubation. A discussion will follow. Participants will receive cookies to-go, to decorate to simulate bacterial growth. Frazier is an assistant professor and teaches introductory biology, general biology, environmental biology, and medical microbiology to students in wide-ranging technical and academic programs. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a focus in science education at Louisiana State University. She is the ASM Young Ambassador to Louisiana 2021. She is a member of the planning committee for the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators. This press release was produced by Shreve Memorial Library.
