Description

Press release from the New Orleans Chamber: April 19, 2022 On Saturday, April 30, New Orleans voters have an opportunity to ensure a critical investment is made in our youngest citizens for the next 20 years. There is a new 5-mill property tax on the ballot to fund early childhood education in our city. The average cost to most homeowners will be approximately $5 a month. According to Yes for NOLA Kids, the 5 mills will not result in an increase in overall millage rates given several recent expirations and roll backs. This is a smart investment for the future of New Orleans. Quality early childhood education makes sense for everyone. It sets children and families up for success by providing more accessibility and affordability for programs that offer child care and education to boys and girls before they enter kindergarten. Studies show that children who receive early learning experiences before they start kindergarten are school-ready, and they are more likely to succeed throughout life. Additionally, when our youngest children have consistent, safe, quality childcare, it also helps their parents and caregivers stay in their jobs, which positively impacts the New Orleans economy. The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce is proud to join other leading community groups in the city to support the measure and encourages all citizens to vote for the investment it will create for our community.
