SAN LEANDRO, CA — A shooting suspect arrested Sunday night tried to kill himself in a San Leandro jail cell, police said. The 33-year-old Sacramento man was taken into custody after he allegedly fired several shots into the air about 11:30 p.m., during an argument with an ex-girlfriend at a home in the 1100 block of Avon Avenue, police said. The suspect, whose name was not released, told officers that he had intended to kill both residents at the house and report the killings to police after going home, according to a news release on Monday from San Leandro police. After being arrested on suspicion of crimes that included willfully discharging a firearm at or near a dwelling, the man taken to the San Leandro Police Department jail. He was medically screened before being booked into jail, police said. During a routine wellness check at the jail shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, a police service technician found the man hanging from the jail cell. He was the only person in the cell, police said. The technician called for medical assistance, and three officers and a sergeant began CPR on the unconscious suspect. Paramedics helped to revive him and he was taken to a hospital, according to police. An independent outside investigator will conduct an administrative review, and counseling is being provided to employees involved, according to police.
