SMITHFIELD, RI — The Boston Marathon returned on its traditional Patriots Day date this week, with more than 25,000 athletes completing the 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Boylston Street. Smithfield had one runner represent it in the 126th running of the Boston Marathon. Evans Chebet of Kenya took first place among the men with a finishing time of 2:06:51, and Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won in the women's group with a time of 02:21:01.
