ELMHURST, IL – Authorities on Tuesday corrected the information on the owner of the ambulance that hit black ice near Elmhurst, which led to a fatal pile-up crash. On Tuesday, the DuPage County Sheriff's Office said the vehicle was owned by Elite Ambulance. Earlier this month, it said the owner was Superior Ambulance. The office corrected the information in response to a Patch inquiry. The crash took place about 7 a.m. April 9 on Roosevelt Road, near the Interstate 294 interchange, southeast of Elmhurst. After the crash, the Sheriff's Office said at the time that it would withhold the name of the woman who died to allow her family to be notified. On Tuesday, the Sheriff's Office still declined to release the woman's name, referring questions about her identity to the county coroner's office. Patch left a message with the coroner. A teenager, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was hospitalized. Information on the youth's status is unavailable. According to the Sheriff's Office, an out-of-service Elite ambulance struck black ice, causing the driver to lose control. In response, other cars hit each other. A woman from one of them got out to inspect the damage when an oncoming Dodge Durango appeared to have lost control on the black ice and struck her, authorities said. The driver of the Dodge Durango was cited on a charge of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, sheriff's spokesman Justin Kmitch said Tuesday. Patch has filed a public records request for the crash report. Elite Ambulance couldn't be reached for immediate comment.
