Press release from Tulsa Public Schools: April 18, 2022 The District Art Show is showcasing student artwork this week. From sculptures and self-portraits to jewelry and printmaking, students of all ages have put a lot of work into these incredible pieces. This year's show also features a glow room, with projects lit up with a black light. "When I walk through the District Art Show, I feel joy. We have amazing artistic talent at Tulsa Public Schools, and to see it all in one place speaks to the power of the arts in education across the district. It gives me chills!" said Fine Arts Content Manager Aleks Kitchens. "The past two years have been incredibly hard, and the District Art Show feels like a reminder of what is good and happy. The influence of the pandemic is present in emotional tone and depictions of figures in masks, but collectively the artwork is an expression of resiliency, how creating helps us process pain, joy, and every feeling in between." The District Art Show was made possible by art teachers around the district guiding their students to success. "While the student artwork is the star of the show, none of it would be possible without the real heroes – the art teachers! They have worked incredibly hard all year to create work with their students, and they put in a lot of time and energy the past few days to get all the artwork on display. I'm grateful for their passion and commitment to developing and displaying student artistic talent," said Kitchens. The show runs from Monday, April 18 to Friday, April 22 at Wilson Teaching and Learning Academy (2710 E. 11th St. Tulsa, OK). It is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The student award reception will take place on Tuesday, April 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. Prizes are awarded by grade level and category. Winners receive cash prizes generously supported by the Levitt family. This press release was produced by Tulsa Public Schools. The views expressed here are the author's own.
