MANSFIELD, MA — Mansfield residents will be receiving a break in their electric rates this summer after the Municipal Electric Department announced a 5 percent rate cut effective July 1. The Mansfield MED Board of Light Commissioners voted to approve the rate cut at their April 29 meeting. Mansfield MED said the cut is based on an increase in purchase power that will result in a decrease in costs for the non-profit company. Rates will drop from 11.65 cents per kilowatt hour to 10.95 cents for residential customers, and 14.59 cents to 13.86 cents for commercial customers. Mansfield MED said those rates are 45 percent and 30 percent lower than National Grid rates, respectively. Mansfield MED said the rates are the second-lowest of any community in Massachusetts. "During this time of uncertainty," Mansfield MED General Manager Joe Sollecito said, "we want our customers to know we are committed to keeping our rates as affordable as possible." Mansfield Electric was established in 1903 and is one of 40 publicly owned utilities in Massachusetts.
