NORWICH, CT — The union representing more than 400 nurses at Backus Hospital voted to approve a new four-year contract with the hospital, The Hartford Business Journal reported. The Backus Federation of Nurses had gone on strike for two days earlier this month due to issues with pay and personal protective equipment. The strike began Oct. 13 and was intended to put pressure on leadership to offer a better deal after the previous contract ended Sept. 1. The new deal will run through Oct. 21, 2024, and increases nurses' average hourly pay from $29.59 to $31.45, according to The Hartford Business Journal. It is believed this outbreak is linked to an earlier outbreak at Three Rivers Healthcare, a nursing home also in Norwich.
