Learn about the many local grocery stores from a time long ago.
Patty Williamson, a feature writer for Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living, will present the program at the April 25 meeting of the Door County Historical Society, based on her stories about long-ago grocery stores that have appeared in the Peninsula Pulse over the past three years.
They once dotted the countryside and villages in Door County—the little grocery stores that met so many needs. In the day when many families had no automobile—or women did not drive—housewives depended upon a store within walking distance, where they could send a child for an item needed immediately, like an ingredient for a cake already begun or extra pork chops when unexpected company arrived.
Dr. Williamson will share anecdotes about 39 of the many old stores she has written about, ranging from far northern to far southern Door County.
