Description

A history and culture walking tour of the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans, led by lifelong resident and leader Nicolas Holmes. Join Nicolas Holmes, lifelong Central City resident and community leader, for a walk through Central City. We will learn about places and people that are vital to understanding the neighborhood, New Orleans history and culture, and U.S. history. Starting at the Legacy of Central City exhibition, we’ll make stops at sites such as the city’s first African American library, the Kid Ory House, the Young Men Olympian headquarters, A.L. Davis Playground, and the former Magnolia Projects. We’ll explore how backswamp became a working class neighborhood. How Civil Rights era activism emerged from the neighborhood’s parks, streets, homes, and churches. How hip hop can help us understand the significance of public housing and what New Orleans was like before Hurricane Katrina. And how the present day practices that bring our streets to life – e.g., second lines, Black Masking Indians – are rooted in hundreds of years of struggle, mutual aid, and irrepressible creativity.
