OAK CREEK, WI — Sunday was national Haiku Day this year. In honor of the special holiday celebrating the poems, we asked readers in Oak Creek to create a Haiku of their own that draws inspiration from Wisconsin. A haiku is a poem that doesn't rhyme. It has 17 syllables, which are split into three lines of five, seven and five, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The poetry tradition emerged in Japan in the 17th century. Patch asked local residents to write a haiku of their own about their home state, Wisconsin. "Write a haiku about Wisconsin. Remember: it's 5-7-5."
