Description
Join us for a screening of filmmaker Leya Hale's documentary "Bring Her Home", a keynote address, a panel discussion, and dinner. The ongoing crisis of Missing, Murdered, and Indigenous Women has been devastating Indigenous and First Nations communities for far too long. The issue has reached epidemic proportions as it continues to be overlooked by persons outside of Native communities and underfunded by government agencies. On May 4th, 2021, President Biden signed a proclamation designating May 5th as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day. In honor of MMIP Awareness Day, Project HEAL is partnering with Missouri State University's Department of Anthropology, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, KSMU/OPT, Multicultural Programs, the Southwest Missouri Indian Center, and Stand Against Trafficking to host an event on Missouri State campus*. We will be screening the documentary film, "Bring Her Home" by filmmaker Leya Hale, hosting a keynote speaker and panel discussion, and wrapping up the event with a shared meal. The purpose of the event is to not only bring awareness to the ongoing MMIW crisis and its impact on Indigenous communities, but to also provide opportunities for our community to act. Schedule for the evening: 5:00 pm: Documentary Screening*6:00 pm: Keynote Speaker followed by panel discussion7:00 pm: Dinner We are grateful for the following MSU departments and offices direct sponsorship of event: Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Multicultural Programs, General Counsel, and Department of Humanities and Public Affairs. *Event will be in-person with an option to participate virtually. *Documentary and documentary trailer contains content that may be disturbing and/or triggering to some.
