WESTFIELD, NJ — Two people reported that they were hit during a pellet gun shooting in Westfield last week, according to the town's most recent police blotter. The two men told Westfield Police that they were struck by the pellets in the area of East Broad Street and Elmer Street on Friday at around 9:19 p.m. Westfield Police conducted a motor vehicle stop and arrested four teenagers from Linden in connection with the shooting. Two of them were 16 years old, and the other two were 17 years old, according to police. Michael Walsh of Westfield Police Department said the guns were described in the report as "splat guns." Splat guns typically contain soft water gel beads that can blast the small pellets. The teens were each charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. They were then released to their parents, Walsh said. In related news, a TikTok trend — dubbed the "Orbeez Challenge" — has been circulating throughout the country for the past month. The trend encourages people to shoot Orbeez pellets at others with a gel blaster gun or other toy gun. A similar incident occurred in Westfield in late March when a woman was shot at with plastic pellets with an airsoft gun. The suspects drove up alongside her and shot several pellets at her, according to Westfield Police.
