Description

Join us on a riverboat cruise down the Susquehanna to toast our West Shore neighbors for their preservation work! Historic Harrisburg Association is pleased to announce that our 2022 Preservation Celebration will raise “a Toast to Harrisburg’s West Shore,” a region that has been a vital part of our community since John Harris established his ferry service in 1733, deemed “the most historic crossing place on the Susquehanna.” While suburban historic preservation is not a new trend, a crescendo of recent initiatives and accomplishments on Harrisburg’s West Shore is especially worthy of attention and, in our opinion “a toast!” These include: - The successful relocation and preservation of the Enola Miller House - Formation of the Friends of the West Shore Theatre to preserve, restore, and operate the historic theatre as a multi-purpose cultural venue. - Growth of the West Shore Historical Society and the hiring of its new director, Janice Lynx - Grassroots campaigns to preserve the historic Bishop’s Bridge and Sheepford Road Bridge - Transformation of the long-vacant Lemoyne Middle School into residential use as “the Schoolhouse Flats” Join us on Sunday, May 22nd, from 4 to 6PM, as we set sail about the famous “Pride of the Susquehanna” Riverboat for a two-hour excursion from City Island, showcasing the beauty of the East and West Shores of our majestic Susquehanna River as we raise a toast to Harrisburg’s West Shore and the places and people that make it so special.
