West Suburban Pantry Plagued By Rising Food Costs, Supply Shortages

WOODRIDGE, IL — Rising food costs and supply shortages have heavily impacted West Suburban Community Pantry is recent months, according to a recent announcement. The Woodridge-based pantry, which serves families in DuPage and Will Counties, has recently been forced to source many of its food staples and other items from different suppliers. Coupled with the surge in product prices, this supply shortage is putting strain on the pantry. Director of Pantry Operations Paul Matsushima, said in a news release, "We are currently spending over $2,000 more a week than we were a few months ago to meet demand. If we see an increase in the number of people we serve, that dollar amount will go up even more." Matsushima went on to encourage residents to make donations during this time. He said following items are needed: Canned pasta and other ready-to-eat mealsCanned tomatoes and saucesChiliCleaning products Diapers Dried beansFood storage bagsLarge fruit juice containersLaundry detergentToilet paper Liz Spaeth, who is the pantry's director of development, echoed Matsushima's sentiments, urging residents to make cash donations as well. Spaeth said, "We can buy a dozen eggs for about 75 cents, [whereas] they are going for well over $2 retail. We can buy a gallon of milk for $2, whereas it costs double that at the grocery store," She added, "And 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to feeding our neighbors in need. And of course, donations are tax-deductible." The pantry recently announced that its executive director, Laura Traut Coyle, is stepping down to pursue a "lifelong career," per a news release.
