Description
NEW LENOX, IL — Motorists on Interstate 80 should be aware of crews working to clean up litter along the expressway, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Cleanup was scheduled to begin Monday and is expected to continue throughout the week, weather permitting.
Cleanup crews will be on I-80 from 80th Avenue to Parker Road, which runs through parts of Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox.
Lane closures will not be required for the cleanup, IDOT said, but equipment and workers may be present on the shoulder. Motorists are asked to remain alert, slow down, move over and give maintenance teams space to work.
IDOT said it spent approximately $41.3 million statewide in 2021 on picking up litter, sweeping shoulders and removing large debris. That's the equivalent of resurfacing 21 miles of roadway or purchasing 261 new maintenance trucks that also plow snow in winter, according to IDOT.
