DARIEN, IL – Weeks after its contract with Darien ended, Waste Management has yet to pick up some of its rollout carts around town, a city official said Monday.
City Administrator Bryon Vana suggested residents turn in the carts as bulk items as part of the trash pickup with the new company, Morton Grove-based LRS. He said residents should attach a sign reading "take."
"With the Waste Management carts, there has been a delay. At some point, they're not going to be picked up," Vana said at a City Council meeting. "Time's up."
The carts were supposed to be picked up within a few days after Waste Management's contract expired March 31, Vana said.
"Waste Management has had more than enough time," he said.
Alderwoman Mary Sullivan said she saw a truck last Thursday picking up Waste Management carts.
"I still saw some cans at the curb," she said. "Obviously, they couldn't get everything."
Vana said a route supervisor for Waste Management has been responsive. But he said residents reported they have called the company about the issue and have been put on hold.
"They don't have the same phone system as LRS," he said.
In a statement to Patch, spokeswoman Lisa Disbrow said, "WM has retrieved the majority of the residential carts. We are continuing to pick up any carts missed that were not left out after the last day of service. "
In some cases, Waste Management apparently took recycling carts before its contract ended. The city said it got calls in mid-March that the company was taking carts from residents who had not paid up.
In a couple of cases, residents were not delinquent on their bills, the city said.
