MENDOTA, MN — The Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community is hosting a fundraiser for a community center. The fundraiser will be held June 4 from 12-4 p.m. at St. Peter's Church, located at 1405 Sibley Memorial Highway in Mendota, the tribal community said. Admission to the fundraising event is $15, which will include a meal and refreshments, Mendota Dakota said. According to the tribal community, members have been working to create a community center for nearly 30 years. The community center will be used for meetings, language and cultural classes, teaching the tribal community's children and helping the tribal community's elders, Mendota Dakota said. According to its website, Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Tribal Community is a 501C3 organization "dedicated to protecting important and sacred sites and bringing Dakota Oyate (nation) culture back to its birthplace in Minnesota," but is not yet recognized by the federal government.
