The Fleet Mechanic performs highly skilled work in the repair and maintenance on a wide variety of mechanical equipment including automobiles, trucks, tractors, construction, maintenance, and other power-driven equipment. The incumbent must exercise independent judgment in diagnosing mechanical problems and selecting methods of repair. The Lead Mechanic will provide guidance and direction to Fleet Mechanics I and II. All Fleet Mechanic levels will report directly to the Fleet Manager. Performs other work as assigned or required. The Fleet Mechanic must work well independently and with teams, while providing innovative, excellent and respectful customer service, which support the City of Louisville’s mission and values. SALARY INFORMATION: POSITION LEVEL: HIRING RANGE: SALARY RANGE: Fleet Mechanic I: $25.47/hr - $29.29/hr $25.47/hr - $33.68/hr Fleet Mechanic II: $27.55/hr - $31.68/hr $27.55/hr - $36.43/hr SIGN-ON BONUS: Successful candidate will receive a one-time sign-on bonus of $1,000.00 on the first pay period after 90 days of employment. The position could close at anytime without notice. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Assists with acquisitions and the decommissioning of all city fleet assets. Upfits new fleet units into service. Purchases and maintains an inventory of parts, supplies and materials; initiates the procurement of equipment and associated components, tools and supplies as needed Submits all fleet related purchase orders and invoices; prepares work orders; maintains other records as needed. May assist and/or perform fleet related budgetary responsibilities. Responsible for getting vehicles from all departments for preventative maintenance; maintains fleet database. Inspects, diagnoses, and maintains routine service needs; repairs a variety of heavy and medium-duty fleet units (including but not limited to, loaders, graders, dump trucks, and street sweepers); light-duty automotive fleet units (automobiles, and trucks); and small fleet units (riding lawn mowers, bobcat and tractors). Repairs, rebuilds or adjusts all mechanical, electrical and computer systems to include brakes, batteries, wiring, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic valves systems, and high-pressure pumps. Makes service calls on fleet units to perform emergency repairs; conducts road tests of fleet units to diagnose any malfunction; evaluates fleet units experiencing frequent breakdowns to determine cause and attempt to prevent future occurrences. Operates hand and power shop tools to perform repairs and/or to fabricate machine parts for fleet units. Changes and repairs tires and tubes as necessary. Raises vehicles and equipment with hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical components on the underside of vehicles; removes components such as engines, transmissions, or differential; disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear; repairs and replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearings. Responsible for and maintains the vehicle maintenance program, record keeping, and work orders as well as time and materials used by job. Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work. Provides 24-hour on-call response for emergency maintenance and snow and ice removal from streets and public facilities. Clears ice and snow from streets, roads, parking lots and sidewalks to ensure the safety of the community. Lead Mechanic will provide day-to-day oversite of operations within the Fleet Division. Is responsible for providing their own general and standard tools This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety requirements, rules and regulations of the trade. Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of the principles of operation of the gasoline and diesel fueled engines. Knowledge of air conditioning, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Skill in the use of tools and electronic and mechanical testing equipment of the trade. Skill in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft Office software programs as well as other maintenance software programs. Skill in the use of computerized automotive diagnostic equipment. Ability to adapt to ever-changing and situational needs of multiple department requests and prioritize accordingly. Ability to read, understand, and complete written request and work assignments and work with and understand schematics and maps. Ability to perform a full range of equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of gasoline and diesel powered equipment for both major and minor repair work. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to read manuals, understand diagrams and interpret video. Ability to be on call, work nights, weekends, holidays, and shifts. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent is required An Associate Degree in automotive and/or diesel technology is preferred. Fleet Mechanic I: One (1) year of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of either automotive and truck equipment, or one year with tractors, loaders, or other heavy equipment in a formal automotive repair or teaching facility. Fleet Mechanic II: Three (3) years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of either automotive and truck equipment or one year with tractors, loaders, or other heavy equipment in a formal automotive repair or teaching facility. Lead Fleet Mechanic: Five (5) years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of automotive and truck equipment, including one year with tractors, loaders, or other heavy equipment in a formal automotive repair or teaching facility, including specialized training, in vehicle repair and vehicle shop operations is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED: Valid State of Colorado Driver’s License, with the ability to attain a commercial driver’s license class B w/ air brakes within six (6) months of employment. Fleet Mechanic II: Pass a minimum of two Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests in any of the following areas: Automotive/Light Truck (A1-A8), Medium/Heavy Truck (T2-T7), or Transit Bus (H3-H8 plus H1 or H2). Lead Fleet Mechanic: Unexpired Master Certification in one or more of the following areas: Automotive/Light Truck (ASE A1-A8), Medium/Heavy Truck (ASE T2-T7), or Transit Bus (ASE H3-H8 plus H1 or H2). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; read, speak and hear. The employee is required to walk and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The majority of the work is performed in the shop environment. There are occasions when the employee is required to respond to a field situation, and in such instances is exposed to traffic, and all types of weather conditions. While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is occasionally exposed to very wet and cold, or very humid conditions, as well as toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
