Nassau Man Leads Police On Chase In Car He Stole At Gunpoint: PD

A Plainview man was arrested after he led officers on a chase in a car he stole at gunpoint in Bellmore early Thursday morning, police said. According to police, a man was sitting in his car in the parking lot of Crunch Fitness, at 2212 Centre Ave., when he was approached by Robert Wong, 21, of Mellow Lane. Wong asked the man if he was his Uber driver, police said, and then pulled out a handgun and demanded the man get out of the car and hand over his wallet. Wong then got into the car and drove off north on Centre Avenue, police said. Officers responding to the scene found the car and turned on their lights in an attempt to pull Wong over, police said. But police say Wong refused to pull over and drove off, forcing the officers to give chase. Wong drove onto the Southern State Parkway, police say, heading west in the eastbound lanes. He then made a U-turn and tried to get off the parkway, but lost control of the car and crashed into a guardrail, police said. Police say Wong then tried to flee the scene on foot and actively tried to resist the officers. The officers used a taser to subdue him, police said, and then Wong was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. While trying to get Wong to stop the car, police say an officers injured his wrist while avoiding a collision with Wong's car. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. During the processing for his arrest, police say that detectives determined Wong was responsible for more robberies: Sept. 2, 2019 — Robbery of Dunkin Donuts, 1068 Old Country Road, PlainviewSept. 8, 2019 — Robbery of 7 Eleven, 156 Covert Ave., Stewart ManorSept. 21, 2019 — A carjacking at 3265 Railroad Ave., WantaghWong was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. He was also charged with three counts of second-degree robbery for the 2019 incidents. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead later today.
