This trip is for those who love the outdoors, camaraderie, good food, music and a little bit of history. SATURDAY, MAY 14 – Trip Kickoff and Full Moon Paddle The Christo Voyage kicks off at sunset from River’s Edge Kayak and Canoe. A small sail made of fabric from Christo’s famed 1976 “Running Fence” art installation will lead you downriver for a ceremonial kick off to the Summer 2022 season. SUNDAY, MAY 15 – FRIDAY, MAY 20 – The Journey A six day journey downriver stopping at favorite locales and activities including wine tasting, fly fishing, and horseback riding. Why is this called the Christo Voyage? “In 1976, Christo Vladimirov Javacheff — now hailed as the world’s foremost installation artist and one of the great creative visionaries of the past five decades, installed the large scale artwork “Running Fence” over 24.5 miles of Sonoma farmland. ‘The project not only brought Sonoma County to the attention of the world, it also brought the people of Sonoma County together.’ said local resident Joe Pozzi. After the fence came down, the world’s largest extant remaining piece of “Running Fence” was gifted from Christo to the Monte Rio Theater. For 46 years, the fabric has billowed from the ceiling, an enduring reminder that trusting your own vision can create unexpected joy. Christo’s inspiration was spurred by an appreciation for the unique beauty of Sonoma County. As we transition to a new era of freedom, we want to breathe new life into his legacy. The Christo Voyage is a celebration of the Christo spirit; resilience, appreciation for the community and the beauty of the Russian River. “All of our materials are to be recycled and reused after a project comes down” said Christo. So we’re kicking off our 2022 Christo celebration with our own art project, a river sail crafted from the fabric of “Running Fence.” What did “Running Fence” have to do with the Monte Rio movie theater? After the fence came down, the world’s largest extant remaining piece of “Running Fence” was gifted from Christo to the Monte Rio Theater. Are you showing “Running Fence” at the Monte Rio Theater? Yes! Our closing ceremony will feature live music, a screening of “Running Fence” and the chance to freestyle paint the side of the historic Monte Rio theater. Unleash your inner artist! What is “Running Fence” about? Nominated for an Academy Award in 1978, the film depicts the long struggle by the artists, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, to build a 24 mile fence of white fabric over the hills of California disappearing into the Pacific. The Christo spirit of resilience, freedom and courage is what inspired this voyage to connect the people and land of the Russian River.
