The African American Heritage Foundation of Southeastern, NC, Inc., in conjunction with The Leland Cultural Arts Center! The African American Heritage Foundation of Southeastern, NC, Inc., in conjunction with The Leland Cultural Arts Center, are bringing the “Bunce Island Exhibit” to Leland Cultural Arts Center. The general public is invited to tour the free exhibit from 11am to 3pm June 18, 2022. The traveling, exhibit tells the story of Bunce Island in Sierra Leone, Its connection to the Atlantic slave trade, its historic relationship to the regions of mainland North America. The exhibit consists of 20 display panels, each containing text and images illustrating Bunce Island’s history and links to the United States. The exhibit includes period drawings and pictures illustrating the slave trade in Sierra Leone and North America. It features computer-generated images showing how Bunce Island appeared in the year 1805 and an 8-minute video. The exhibit also examines recent visits to Bunce Island by African Americans, including Thomalind Polite,young schoolteacher from South Carolina, whose ancestor, Priscilla, was a 10-year-old girl taken from Bunce Island to Charleston in 1756.
