NEW YORK CITY — A twice-weekly pre-pandemic annoyance is returning for New York City car owners. The city's alternate-side parking rules will be fully restored July 5, officials said. Sanitation officials touted the move as part of an $11 million investment in street cleaning announced Monday. Enforcing full alternate-side parking rules will help bring streets back their full cleanliness, officials said. But it also means potential frustration for car owners who grew used to alternate-side parking rules only being enforced once-a-week during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jessica Tisch, the city's newly appointed sanitation commissioner, cast the street cleaning efforts as a matter of sustainability. "Environmental justice begins at the street level, and clean streets are vital to vibrant neighborhoods and our city's economic recovery," she said in a statement. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration partially suspended alternate-side parking rules during the pandemic's early days.
