Hingham Takes Ownership Of Weir River Water System

HINGHAM, MA — The town of Hingham is now officially the owner of its own water system. This week, the town took over the Weir River Water System that will serve Hingham, Hull and North Cohasset. "It's official!" Hingham town officials said. "For the first time since 1879, after several years of study and deliberation, a historic town meeting vote, and 15 months of transition prep and planning, the town of Hingham officially owns the water system serving Hingham, Hull and North Cohasset. This acquisition marks the culmination of nearly nine years' worth of work by citizen volunteers, staff and external partners. It is a historic day for us all." Officials said SUEZ will operate the system under the direction of the Board of Water Commissioners and the recently hired water superintendent. The town said water service will not be interrupted during the ownership transfer, water rates are unaffected by the ownership transfer, all customers will receive a final bill from Aquarion through July 31 and the normal billing cycle will not change.
