NORWALK, CT — A ten-year veteran Norwalk police officer was arrested Friday on assault and strangulation charges, which police said was the result of "a family violence incident." Officer Jermaine Nash, 44, of Norwalk, was charged with second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault, according to police. In a news release, Police Sgt. Sofia Gulino said the department received a call Friday around 3 p.m. reporting an assault in town. Officers responded to the area where the assault was reported and located a person who was later taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Gulino said. When officers learned the offender was suspected to be Nash, they immediately notified Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik about the incident, Gulino said. Nash was quickly located and cooperated with police, Gulino said. He turned himself in to face charges at police headquarters, where he was relieved of his duty weapon and badge and was held on a $100,000 bond. Gulino said Nash is on administrative leave, which is a requirement for any off-duty incident. Police investigators are working directly with State's Attorney Paul Ferencek to ensure a thorough investigation, with the welfare of the injured person receiving top priority, Gulino said. In a statement, Kulhawik emphasized he was notified at the onset of this incident. "I have confidence in the professionalism of our officers and supervisors in the handling of this case, but wanted to ensure complete transparency in this investigation," Kulhawik said in a statement, "and as such, I requested that the State's Attorney be consulted. As a result, the charges were confirmed and the bond was determined. Additional investigations will be conducted to determine if any additional charges are appropriate."
