NEW HAVEN, CT — Two New Haven residents face fentanyl trafficking charges after investigators bought the drug from them multiple times, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut said. A federal grand jury indictment charged Luis "Bebe" Salaman, 40, and Ismael "Junie" Heredia, 29, both of New Haven, with conspiracy to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl. The men were also charged with possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, 40 grams or more of fentanyl, officials said. Heredia faces seven counts of that charge, while Salaman faces one count. The charges come around six months after the FBI's Safe Streets Task Force learned Salaman was distributing narcotics throughout New Haven, officials said court documents and statements allege. Investigators made "multiple controlled purchases" of fentanyl and heroin from Salaman and Heredia between November 2021 and March 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office said, and the men were arrested on April 5. If convicted, each would face a prison sentence ranging from five years to life, though the U.S. Attorney's Office said the indictment alleges Salaman could face a prison sentence of at least 15 years because of a prior serious violent felony conviction. Salaman is detained while Heredia was released on a $100,000 bond, officials said.
